Painting Flowers: Simple Shapes and Values

Flowers are an incredibly rewarding and beautiful subject – but also a very challenging one. This workshop will introduce you to some crucial concepts and techniques that will make flower painting a little less intimidating.

Catherine Bobkoski brings her extensive figure drawing experience to the practice of representing flowers. In this class, we will develop our paintings the same way you might begin a figure drawing – with gesture, structure, and a clear value statement. Students will focus specifically on how to simplify complex forms by squinting, designing and following a clear value pattern, and thinking in simple, geometric forms. If you have found flowers to be a challenging subject, then following this traditional approach and using a limited color palette will be an eye-opening experience!

Each week will focus on a different kind of flower (daisies, sunflowers, lilies, daffodils, roses) and its specific properties and challenges. This workshop will be an illuminating and inspirational introduction for the aspiring flower painter. All experience levels are welcome.
